Book Club Wrap-Up - Brooklyn

Thanks to everyone who joined us for last night's book discussion of Brooklyn: A Novel by Colm Toibin. Special thanks to Ann for bringing the delicious cookies and Sue for the scrumptious butter pecan cake!

Summary:

Hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking, Colm Toibin's sixth novel, Brooklyn, is set in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, when one young woman crosses the ocean to make a new life for herself.

The book tells the story of an Irish girl, Eilis (pronounced Eye-lish), moving alone to Brooklyn in the 1950s to start a new job and life. The novel moves in a quiet, slow pace which was deliberate on the author's part. Here is an excerpt from an interview with The U.K.'s Telegraph:

Right from the start, Tóibín was determined that this would be a book without any detectable style to it: the story would unfold in the plainest possible way. “I wanted to cut everything right back. Part of that was as an experiment: I was hoping that if you got the level of detail right then the reader would slowly become emotionally involved without knowing at what point that began."

It was interesting to read about long forgotten practices and customs of the 1950s, like the cash carriers in department stores (check out the links below for more info). Several people in our group were frustrated with Eilis' lack of response to the events in her life; she almost always let others make decisions for her. Overall though, I think the group enjoy discussing our likes and dislikes of different aspects of the book!

John Lennon

Tomorrow will mark what would have been the 70th birthday of musician John Lennon. And the library has something about John Lennon for everybody - biographies, music, documentaries, children's book and more! Here are a few of our favorites:

Imagine, John Lennon - DVD Documentary

Lennon's voice provides the narration to this biographical documentary, compiled by the producers from over 240 hours of film and videotape.

Pepperland by Mark Delany - Young Adult novel

Summary: Struggling to come to terms with the death of her mother in the late 1970s, sixteen-year-old Beatles fan Star Cochran hopes to find closure by delivering to John Lennon a letter her mother wrote to him in 1964 but never sent.

Real love : the drawings for Sean by John Lennon - Children's Picture Book

A collection of drawings made by the late musician captures the love and great joy he had for his young son.

Instamatic karma : photographs of John Lennon by May Pang - Photography Book

Pang, John Lennon's girlfriend from 1973 to 1975, presents these never-before-seen images of the music icon. She has written rich captions to accompany her photos--taken together, they tell a simple story of the time she and Lennon spent together.

The Beatles star in this film about a "typical" day in the life of the Beatles.

For more information visit John Lennon's official website or search the library's catalog for a complete list of John Lennon items.
