Hip & Hop Don't Stop

Hip & Hop, don't stop! by Jef Czekaj is a delightful, fresh take on the fable The Tortoise and the Hare. Queen Latreefrog, Ludafish, Jay Zebra are just some of the names and characters in the story. When Ms. Nina and Ms. April read this book at storytime, the adults had just as much fun listening to it as the kids!

Publisher's Summary:
Hip is a turtle who raps really slowly. Hop is a bunny who raps superfast. Even though they both live in Oldskool County, neither of them has ever met. When they see a sign for a rap-off, they become fast friends. When the big contest arrives, neither slow nor fast wins the prize. This debut picture book features simple, engaging art that combines elements of comics with those of a traditional picture book. Short, humorous raps read at varying speeds make this a rollicking read aloud that kids will want to hear over and over.

Jef Czekaj is an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator and musician. This is his first picture book that he both wrote and illustrated. And.....Hip & Hop have their own website! Check it out and check out their video:

Book Club Wrap-Up - Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet

Thanks to everyone who joined us for last night's book discussion of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet. Special thanks to Charlotte for bringing tea and the delicious cookies and to Rebecca for sharing her beautiful photos from a recent trip to Seattle. The group enjoyed both the refreshments and the pictures!

Book Summary:

In the opening pages of Jamie Ford’s stunning debut novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

This simple act takes old Henry Lee back to the 1940s, at the height of the war, when young Henry’s world is a jumble of confusion and excitement, and to his father, who is obsessed with the war in China and having Henry grow up American. While “scholarshipping” at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, where the white kids ignore him, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship–and innocent love–that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.

Everyone in the group enjoyed this book, even with some improbable parts in the story. It was easy to love the characters and get wrapped up in the history of the time and what the outcome would be for Henry and Keiko.

Mr. Ford's second novel is due to be released in early 2011 and there are links to some of his short stories on his website.
